Green Tea and Weight Loss- The Green Tea Diet

Green tea and Oolong tea has been used in China and Japan to promote health throughout history. It has been believed in China for many years that tea helps control obesity.

While green tea has become popular in the United States for weight loss, Oolong tea is actually more effective in controlling weight. Polyphenols are the effective ingredients in tea which enhance fat metabolism and Oolong tea contains more polyphenols than either green or black tea.

Additionally, tea speeds up the metabolism around 4%. While a 4% increase is not going to cause a rapid weight loss, for those of us trying to drop a few pounds, any increase is helpful.

The recommended dosage of Tea for weight loss and health promotion is at least 3 cups daily. The Chinese drink Oolong tea from tiny cups repeatedly throughout the day.

The promotion of the green tea diet caused the rise of green tea patches and green tea capsules, as well as using green tea in cooking. While I know of no risks using these products, I would recommend using tea in its natural form, either brewed as a tea, or the powder used in cooking.

The green tea diet was made popular by an appearance of Dr. Perricone on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Here is what Dr. Perricone said about green tea: " Coffee has organic acids that raise your blood sugar, raise insulin. Insulin puts a lock on body fat. When you switch over to green tea, you get your caffeine, you're all set, but you will drop your insulin levels and body fat will fall very rapidly. So 10 pounds in six weeks, I will guarantee it."

Remember, there is no miracle weight loss food or drug. Green tea and especially Oolong tea is a healthy alternative to coffee, with many health benefits in addition to weight control. Use Oolong tea in addition to healthy eating and exercise habits for good results.
